Sync notes across devices, enable secure End-to-End Encryption, and share notebooks using self-hosted Joplin Server.

Note Synchronization and End-to-End Encryption in Joplin

Joplin Server offers high-performance note synchronization. Here is how to configure clients, encrypt notes, and share notebooks.

Client Sync Configuration

  1. Open Joplin on your Desktop, Mobile, or Web Client.
  2. Go to Tools > Options > Synchronization.
  3. Select Joplin Server as the sync target.
  4. Enter the Joplin Server URL (e.g., https://joplin.example.com/api) and your account email/password.

Enforcing End-to-End Encryption (E2EE)

To ensure absolute note privacy: 1. In Joplin settings, navigate to Encryption. 2. Click Enable Encryption and set a strong master password. 3. Joplin will encrypt all notes locally before uploading them to the server. Your note data is completely private.

Sharing Notebooks

  • Right-click any notebook in Joplin and select Share Notebook.
  • Enter the email of the target user (who must have an account on your Joplin Server) to collaborate on notebooks in real time.
